Doctor: Dr. Kushagra Verma

Briefly describe your symptoms and the medical condition that brought you to see the doctor.

I was suffering from very significant sciatica pain that radiated from my lower back all the way to the toe. The MRI showed a small synovial cyst that was pressing against the nerve in the L4 - L5 region.

What one or two things stand out to you about your experience with your doctor and their team?

I was very pleased with my experience with Dr. Verma. He is very knowledgeable and patient. Before I underwent the surgery, he was very willing to try all conservative options prior to the surgery. I never felt rushed and felt that I had plenty of time to explain my issues. He answered all of my questions patiently and professionally making certain I understood all the risks and rewards of the surgery.

What can you do now that you could not do before surgery? Have you been able to return to your hobbies or sports at the same level as pre-injury or at an even higher level?

I am now 8 weeks out from the surgery and undergoing PT. I am pain free for most part at this stage. Sometimes, for very brief periods, I will get hints of part of the original pain but I was told that this is to be expected as the nerve has been irritated for over 6 months prior to the surgery. There are currently some restrictions in terms of bending, lifting etc. that I am following as per Doctor's instructions. My hope is that in the next few weeks I will be able to pursue all normal activities.

What advice would you like to share with a patient with a condition such as yours who is considering surgery?

Having experienced the benefits of the surgery, in hindsight, I should have done the surgery sooner. At the same time, one has to feel comfortable and ready for surgery after evaluating all other options first.

Please share any additional comments!

I can honestly say that Dr. Verma did a superb job guiding me through the process of deciding on the surgery as well as the actual procedure and recovery. Its really great to be mostly pain free at this point and be on my way to leading a normal and active life.
