Unstable Knee, ACL tear
Just two months into a retirement that was supposed to be filled with hikes and bike rides, I caught my foot on an immovable object, heard an ominous pop, felt outrageous knee pain, and took a header into a nearby azalea bush. The MRI showed no intact ACL fibers, non-displaced bone fractures, meniscus tears, Baker's cyst, etc...
The surgeon I saw at that time dismissed me as a candidate for surgery due to my age and weight. I was fitted with a knee brace and encouraged to strengthen the muscles that support the knee. That was the first time in my life that I felt written-off medically. Initially dispirited, I wallowed in food and self-pity, for awhile.....
Fast forward five years. I was leading an active life, exercised in earnest, had lost 65-70 pounds. Nevertheless, my knee became more unstable, and I fell 5 times in as many months. Concerned about the possibility of further injuries, I had a consultation with Dr. Warme for reconsideration of my eligibility for surgery. Fortunately he said the magic words that I was a good candidate for ACL reconstruction.

What one or two things stand out to you about your experience with your doctor and their team?

To a person, I find them all to be accessible, easy to talk to, kind, and respectful. Both Dr. Warme and Carlos performed a thorough but painless examination of my knee. (How is that possible!) Dr. Warme took time to answer all my questions and address any concerns. I feel confident that, even if he had found that I was not a candidate for surgery, he would have delivered the message in a way that was not spirit-crushing. But fortunately he said yes.

I had a severe dislocation many years ago with many years of dislocations (50 or 60) and 3 previous surgeries. I had pain at night time and occational dislocations while sleeping, and pain in multiple area's around the shoulder.

I was somewhat tired of bouncing from doctor to doctor that was unsure of what to do, doctors who weren't willing to accept a difficult case, and doctors who told me that I was OK and I would just get better.

What one or two things stand out to you about your experience with your doctor and their team?

The thing that stood out to me the most during our first visit was that despite the results of the clinical exams, xrays and MRI's. Dr Warme turned to his students and fellows and explaned that I was telling them what was wrong. Meaning the weight that my description of what and how I am feeling means more that a imperfect exam or xray.....which ultimately was exactly right. My imaging and physical exam weren't completely conclusive, but at surgery everything I had explained was clearly identified and repaired.

The day of my surgery I felt like I was the only patient in the entire hospital. The level of care and attention was amazing. The confidence and calm about a situation that I was pretty nervous about was something that I have never experienced before. I have had 12 surgeries, and this group and Dr Warme are the only ones who put me at ease and made me feel like I was the only one there that day. The communication before we went to the operating room by everyone was amazing....there were no questions left unanswered.

I had only seen Dr Warme 1 time prior to surgery, but he is an amazing listener, made me feel like Ive known him my whole life and I trusted that I was getting the best care and he the best guy working on me that day. I am truly thankful and thank God for Dr Warme and his team.

I am a competitive road bike racer, and crashed hard on my shoulder in a race. I knew immediately that the clavicle (collarbone) was broken. It actually did not hurt that bad as long as I immobilized my arm in the sling given to me by the EMT at the race. But, any range of motion with the shoulder was very uncomfortable and made things like bathing, getting dressed, and working quite difficult.

What one or two things stand out to you about your experience with your doctor and their team?

Dr. Warme was fantastic. He got me into his clinic quickly. He assessed my injury, and also how it would affect me specifically. He considered my job and also my hobbies. He explained that clavicle fractures can be managed non-operatively, but that my specific type of break had a high chance for poor bone healing if surgery was not done. Knowing that I was eager to recover and get back on the bike, he had me in the OR only 3 days after the accident. And the surgical result was perfect!
